[edit] Contributions

I recently made my 50th main namespace edit.

The first page that I created, Pixies Fuckin' Die!, was promptly deleted and merged to form List of Pixies tribute albums, but I'm not bitter.

I suppose I will also take credit for Netvibes too, since I essentially re-wrote the whole thing.

[edit] Music

Music is one of my biggest passions. As such I am very critical of the music that I hear, and the music that I listen to.

Whether the following lyrics are completely random or not, I think that the best music follows these other 5 pillars. It is not completely necessary that music follow all of these guidelines to be considered "good." However I assure you that the more of them it follows, the better it will be.

We favor the simple expression of the complex thought.
Music should be simple. Everything present is necessary and is included with a purpose. By this same virtue there should be nothing that is unnecessary. Music should accomplish something, without going over the top.

We are for the large shape, because it has the impact of the unequivocal.
Music should be profound, both in meaning and impact. A song should exist for a reason, and this reason should be at least somewhat involved. Songs with a vacuous or juvenile subject matter offer little, and likely exist for an equally vacant reason. While songs may clearly have a profound meaning, the exact meanings of the lyrics should still be subtle and be up to some interpretation. Protagonists should not just state their emotions. In this same regard an album should accomplish something. An album should be more than a dozen or so independent tracks. An album should be more than the sum of its parts.

We are for flat forms because they destroy illusion and reveal truth.
Music should be raw, and should be reproducible. If an artist is to be truly responsible for the work that they have presented, it should require no editing whatsoever. Any song should be able to be reproduced in a live performance, otherwise the artist is not truly responsible for his or her own work.

The artist was attempting to make art more than something to just look at, they wanted it something to be involved in, something too big to ignore.
Music should be strong. Good music can stand on it's own feet, and when done properly, is not appropriate for "Background music." To be strong and grab attention does not necessarily mean that the music has to be forceful. Music should be dynamic so that it can be expressive more effectively. In its expressing something, music should have an attitude, which is to say that music should be biased. Music should express an emotion as a form of art, and in order to express this emotion, it must have an opinion, and it should be a strong one. Music should convey this opinion in a strong way, and not simply through the lyrics. Music is appreciated best at a high volume, even if it is not "loud" music. The intricacies of expressive music can be heard best when it is both loud and the listener is not being distracted by his or her other senses. The later of which is easier to accomplish when the former is achieved.

It is our function as artists to make the spectator to see the world our way, not his way.
Music should be expressive, and in a non-conforming way. An artist should express something new, and they should do something that hasn't been done. Music should be what it is, and not try to be something else. It should not fit easily into the stagnancy of an uninspired genre. An artist should create music that comes from their own creative center, not because they think that it will be popular, or that they will be able to find success.
