Skyhammer is a game for the Atari Jaguar console, developed by Rebellion (the same team behind Alien vs. Predator), and published by Songbird Productions in 2000.
[edit] Plot
From the official website:
- In the mid-21st century, power-hungry corporations rule the streets of the largest cities. You have been employed by Cytox as a Skyhammer pilot to protect its corporate investments. You will undertake a wide variety of missions to prove your ability and ensure long-term revenues for Cytox.
[edit] Gameplay
The game's look and gameplay resemble the earlier Psygnosis PlayStation release G-Police, as the game world consists of three huge Blade Runner-esque cityscapes. The player controls a flying craft in a similar manner to Descent and has to partake in a number of missions involving objectives to combat crime in the city. Throughout the game money can be earned through successful kills, which can be spent on ship upgrades.
There are two modes of play: Mission Mode and Battle Mode. The former allows you to go on a variety of missions while upgrading your Skyhammer and claiming more territory for your corporation. The latter allows you to fight endless waves of invading corporations. Both modes provide access to three uniquue cities, each with its own distinct layout and challenges.
With challenging, nonlinear missions, ship customization, and a solid 3D engine with animated textures (in the form of flashing billboards), this title is generally regarded by Jag fans and collectors as one of the better Jaguar titles. The framerate, however, can become somewhat choppy when many enemies are on-screen.
