Sinope was also an 1853 naval battle in which the Russians destroyed a Turkish flotilla, demonstrating the devestating power of rifled guns against wooden ships. It influenced the development of French Navy's La Gloire (1859) (the first ironclad warship), HMS Warrior (1860), & the far better known Monitor & Virginia.
