The main character of the story is Nestor Simonithrat Fell, also known as "Simon". At the beginning of the novel, Simon is in a hospital with no idea who he is after losing all knowledge of everything after a trip through a hyper-spatial gate. He is basically an infant in adult form, growing throughout his journey. He progresses onwards through the galaxy, discovering who he was (or possibly wasn't) before his gate accident.

The story consists of journal entries made by Simon as he travels through the galaxy rediscovering himself.
