Silksworth is a suburb of Sunderland, located next to Tunstall, Farringdon and Gilley Law
The area was once a coal mining village but the industry has long gone and a former mine has since been converted into Silksworth Sports Complex, which includes north-east England's largest artificial ski slope and activity centre.
In the mid-1990s, one of the mine shafts at Silksworth that ran below a lake in the area collapsed, leading to the lake draining out. The area was closed off for several months whilst the local authority repaired the problem.
