Sigma Beta
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sigma Beta is an honor society for students at the State University of New York at Stony Brook that is devoted to academic excellence and university service. Those undergraduate students who attain a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 or higher are invited to become provisional members of the society. To obtain full membership within the society, provisional members are required to demonstrate a commitment in assisting the community while maintaining high standards of academic excellence. Full membership is awarded based upon a point system, and points are acquired from involvement in Sigma Beta-sponsored activities, as well as participation in other outside organizations and activities.
Since its establishment, Sigma Beta has contributed to the community of Stony Brook University in a variety of ways, such as sponsoring volunteer tutoring programs, peer advising sessions, food and clothing drives, and visits to the Stony Brook University Hospital Pediatrics Department. In addition, Sigma Beta members have participated in numerous outside activities and programs, such as Habitat for Humanity, volunteering at Stony Brook Veteran's Home, the Special Olympics, Oxfam America, and the Greater Port Jefferson Outreach.
