[edit] GA status
I'm interested in getting this article to meet GA standards. Anyone want to help? Enigma message 17:05, 14 May 2008 (UTC)
- I should have noted some time ago that I am going to/am helping (an Aussie's flavour might just be the thing an article on this guy needs) :) --VS talk 05:43, 6 June 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Note on Luckman's parents
I can't find a name for his father. I found on a blog that Luckman's mother's name was Ethel. Enigma message 04:52, 6 June 2008 (UTC)
- Yep I noted that blog - it's a blog but it seems like a good one (if you know what I mean). I was going to suggest getting his autobiography to see what it says but it appears at this stage that he only referred to his parents as "Dad Luckman" and "Mum Luckman".--VS talk 05:59, 6 June 2008 (UTC)
-
- Yeah, which is unfortunate. I'm sure he knew his parents' names. I'm not really sure why he didn't mention it in the book. Maybe he didn't want to be disrespectful by saying or writing their names. Enigma message 06:00, 6 June 2008 (UTC)
-
- Yeah maybe - but he was born in New York so (I'm not sure how close you are to there physically) the records must be available. It would be a good coup for research because I also can't find anything on the internet at this stage.--VS talk 06:10, 6 June 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Delta Chapter
Not sure if this is usable - but Luckman was in the Delta Chapter at Columbia? link here --VS talk 05:50, 6 June 2008 (UTC)
- I think it's worth mentioning as part of a section on things named after him. I'm sure this wasn't the only thing named after him. Enigma message 05:56, 6 June 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Merchant Marine, Distinguished American Award, and Executive
Nice find. I at first thought it was a subset of the Marines or something, heh. This page says he was a coach at the academy. Not sure when that was. Before he served? Enigma message 06:17, 6 June 2008 (UTC)
- Don't know - he did coach quarterbacks for the Bears after retirement according to this which also notes that he was awarded the Walter Camp Distinguished American Award of the Year Award (definitely worth putting in the article - although of interest the Wiki page does not have him as the winner) and that he became an executive with a Chicago Cellophane company (go figure?)--VS talk 06:40, 6 June 2008 (UTC)
[edit] This is funny
You know that book you referenced, using Google Books? Turns out I own it. I never opened it. It was still in plastic, but I opened it and found the section on Sid. Enigma message 18:09, 6 June 2008 (UTC)
- Also, I'm going to check the Bureau of Vital Records and the New York Times obituaries for more information. Enigma message 18:10, 6 June 2008 (UTC)
-
- Hey there, that is pretty funny about you actually having that book. It's good also from the perspective of being able to list it as a source - which I have now done. Can you please check to see if I have the details correct (year of pub'n, publisherr, ISBN etc)? Good luck with finding details from the Bureau etc.--VS talk 23:19, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Starting to take good shape
We are getting much closer in my view. It would be nice to find out the details of parents (as discussed previously) but also of his children's names. Additional details on his coaching/football links after full-time playing - did he sponsor anyone, did he do speeches, did he gain any honorary diplomas those types of things. Also I wonder if there are any other fair use images that we could add. I noted the fair use rationale for the current photograph and I don't think that we could do that again for another image of Sid but if would could get an image or some sort of graphic of the T-Formation that might work. I did have a look on Commons but didn't see anything - although it probably needs a set of US eyes to search more in-depth.--VS talk 23:48, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
- T-formation stuff on Commons? Very doubtful. Images are going to be a problem for this article. I hope to find more details on his parents, and I'll see if there's any way I can find out about his children. Enigma message 23:52, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
