Talk:Shunan English School
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I fully agree!!! I taught at SES for a year and had tons of problems with the owner, Ms. Etsuko Tajima. Here are some of the things that happened during my 12 months there:
• She hired me to teach English and when I get there, she wanted me to also teach Spanish for no extra pay. I refused to do so and she tried to fire me. • She tried to fire me on several occasions, usually when a student would not want to renew their contract for class. I went to the labor office so, she knew that I would fight and backed off. • She charged teachers for normal wear and tear on the car that is assigned to each teacher. This was done when they were about to leave the school at the end of the contract so that they could not do anything about it. Luckily, she did not try to charge me because she know that I would stay and make a big stink about it. • Cleaning day! On a predetermined date, on a weekend, this woman got all the teachers to clean the entire office. We moved all the furniture out and had to scrub the floors! She is so cheap she did not even rent the proper floor cleaning equipment. We did not even get paid extra or get lunch. I almost quit that day but decided to stick it out. I heard someone refused to do it and quit that same day! • I discovered that she was keeping the income tax return that was due to teachers. In Japan, your income tax form is prepared by your employer and the refund due is sent to the employer which she is supposed to give to you. Your tax is based on the previous year’s income and during the first year, you had no previous income so you get all the money back. If you start in June, around January you get the refund. Then when you leave the following June, you are supposed to get your tax refund for that 6 month period. That is not what she told me though. She said that there was no refund due because we were leaving. Bullshit I thought so, I went to the tax office. I filled out the form and got my tax refund. It turns out that she was keeping the second tax refund from all the other teachers before me and probably is still doing it. • If you think this all sounds bad, the poor Japanese teaching assistants have it much worse. • Overall, Ms Tajima is a manipulative, deceiving and greedy person and by far the worst person for whom I have ever worked!
My advice is don’t work at this school. There are other much better deals out there. I was able to stay there for the full 12 months due to my stubborn nature. Others after me left early and some got fired. It is just not worth the trouble. I hope this helps.
