I've deleted the following because shotguns are primarily used for hunting fowl, and obviously not used in the Vietnam War:

"The term is said to have originated in the Vietnam War after U.S. soldiers adopted the method of smoking cannabis through the barrel of unloaded shotguns."

This pair of sentences seemed a bit dodgy:

This practice was once widely regarded as intimate, and was usually performed only between friends or lovers. However modern times have eliminated the intimacy involved with the shotgun somewhat, as it is now often performed amongst complete strangers.

Surely that's how it would seem to an individual who learned the technique from a friend of lover, who emphasised the intimacy of it, and then later saw it practiced among strangers, leading to a wistfulness for the "good old days", or something. I find it difficult to take the assertion at face value, in the absence of any evidence, which it seems would be difficult to gather. I reworded the sentences to be more NPOV.

Actually, that is how the term originated. Here's a video showing US soldiers in Vietnam smoking weed from a shotgun on YouTube. I'll add the deleted statement. Gold Stur 01:00, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

Shotguns were common in the Vietnam War and almost every war since "the Great War" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shotgun#World_Wars
