  • What is a typical SMSC, physically? A mainframe computer? A bank of computers? Can we get a photo of one?
    • Physically, a rack-mounted server.
  • What types of connections to the outside world does the SMSC have?
    • SS7 signalling links, and IP for things like MMS messaging.
  • What kinds of software runs on the SMSC? What operating system?
    • Any decent server OS - usually UNIX or Linux.
  • How specialized is the hardware?
    • Simply a mid -to- high-end server. Not specialised at all, apart from the SS7 PCI card.
  • Where does the SMSC fit into this diagram?
