The Shortt-synchronome free pendulum system was an electromechanical system in which a "free" pendulum was synchronized with a mechanical timekeeping clock by means of electromagnets.
Invented by William Harrison Shortt, it was first demonstrated in 1921, becoming the clock standard used to establish GMT in 1929.
