Shobha Gurtu

Shobha Vishwanath Gurtu (1925 – September 27, 2004) was one of India's most famous singers in the light classical style. She was popularly known as the Thumri Queen.

Born in Belgaum, she was first trained by her mother Menekabai Shirodkar, a professional dancer disciple of Ustad Alladiya Khan of the Jaipur Atrauli gharana.

She continued her vocal studies under Ustad Ghamman Khan and also Ustad Nathan Khan. She specialized in semiclassical forms as thumri, dadra, kajri, etc. She was particularly influenced by singer Begum Akhtar and Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan.

She earned a Filmfare nomination as Best Female Playback Singer for the song "Sayyan Rooth Gaye" from the hit film Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki (1978).[1]

In 1989 she received the Sangeet Natak Academy award. She also got the Lata Mangeshkar Puraskar, Shahu Maharaj Puraskar and the Maharashtra Gaurav Puraskar. In 2002, she was awarded the Padma Bhushan.

Her son Trilok Gurtu is a famed percussionist. Her other son's name is Narendra.
