"she has worked to encourage the quality of undergraduate". I am wondering what this means. Wouldn't such work be in the basic job description of any college president? If so, why mention it? Wikismile 15:08, 10 November 2005 (UTC)

I'm not sure those political considerations regarding Strum's management belong to a biographical article. It would be more appropriate to move them, if necessary, to the University entry itself. We would rather like more usual biographical information (her life, her works) than knowledge concerning students' wants and desires (having a coffee machine, destroying the University, etc.). She has worked to beautify the campus by overseeing the construction of new academic buildings, as well as the Student Activities Center. However, many students believe she has spent too much time and money beautifying the campus, presumably to boost enrollment, but has not done enough to improve student life. Students feel that she should work to improve the University from the inside out - that is, to first improve what already exists for current students, then improve the campus' appearance[citation needed]. Issues of concern to students are severely inflated food prices on campus (2-3 times or more than local supermarket prices as of December, 2006), annual increases in food prices on campus despite them already being inflated, and maintenance of the campus' residence halls.[citation needed]
Emblematic of the issues which some undergraduates take with her leadership is the Charles B. Wang Center, completed in 2002 at a cost well above its budget. The Center, which is located at the edge of the main academic mall on the West Campus, holds neither faculty offices nor classrooms. Apart from its food court and occasional Asian-themed entertainments, the building is primarily used to host academic conferences. Many undergraduates feel that the building serves only to aggrandize Stony Brook University's reputation in the academic world without directly benefiting students, absorbing moneys that might otherwise go towards the upkeep and repair of classroom and dormitory buildings.
