[edit] Extensive Vandalism

This page has been vandalized quite frequently by I.P. address 67.87.55.236 If you look at the history, click on this IP and you'll see it only edits articles related to the Shiny Toy Guns, and the edits are always vandalism. This page will probably need to be IP protected. --Tyrion1500

[edit] Depeche Mode cover

shiny toy guns covered Depeche Mode's "Stripped" on the "VA - Goth Electro Tribute To Depeche Mode". Someone who writes better than me should include this.

-- Family Guy Guy 01:03, 2 February 2006 (UTC)

Yeah, I had been thinking about that just hadn't gotten around to it. I will shortly. :) -- gRegor 16:57, 2 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Weird Questions

Why is Shiny Toy Guns in Wikipedia? and why did Gregorri Chad Petree from the band write his bands own Wiki?

1) They're a noteworthy band. 2) I presume you mean me? I'm not Chad from the band, my name is Gregor Morrill and I'm from Indianapolis. I've done a lot of editing on their entry because I'm a fan of theirs and have booked them previously in Indianapolis. I don't see any evidence that Chad Petree has edited this entry. — gRegor 06:55, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
I would assume they are here because someone wrote an article about them. I don't know whats noteworthy about them, though. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Can Not (talkcontribs) 22:50, 19 February 2007 (UTC).
They've toured extensively nationally and internationally, have an album out on a major record label, and have multiple non-trivial published works (e.g. MTV's You Hear It First). All of which makes them generally notable by the guidelinesgRegor 23:54, 22 February 2007 (UTC)
Not to mention the three songs that charted on the Modern Rock Tracks chart and the Grammy nomination. Doc StrangeMailboxLogbook 01:28, 20 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Bio

I removed this paragraph from the bio:

Originally from Shawnee, Oklahoma, the band gained notoriety and success after genre hopping several "next big thing" styles til they fit into the electro clash genre, changing the name and look.
They have even gone so far to work it with "a faux british accent" to quote the Oklahoma Gazzette and even boast they are from L.A. California - bringing much criticism from the local Oklahoma fan base.

It's plagiarized wholesale from here, for one thing, and for another thing I don't even believe it's accurate. It's certainly not NPOV. Jeremy Dawson and Chad have both been involved in various music projects over the years (sometimes together), in various genres, but that's different than saying Shiny Toy Guns genre-hopped. I've found nothing to support the claims "quoted" from the Oklahoma Gazzette. — gRegor 07:08, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

No, it is not plagiarized wholesale, they took it from me. I wrote it first, here, on this page. they took it from here and published it, which is quite cool.

It may or may not have some amount or degree of truth to it, but thanks for keeping NPOV in mind.

I took this line out: "It has been speculated that 'Shiny Toy Guns' album 'We Are Pilots' is not eligible for a GRAMMY nomination since the album had three previous releases prior to the October 17, 2006 Universal Records release ('We Are Pilots' (v3) and had been released by the band on the Internet for digital download sale and full online streaming prior to October 1, 2006) GRAMMY nominations for the 50th GRAMMY awards are for albums released from October 1, 2006 to September 30, 2007." This is referring to a spam/fake letter from a fake attorney to a Grammy administrator. Although a Shiny Toy Gun stalker keeps posting this fake letter as a comment on news feeds and blogs, no reliable source has published anything about the Grammys reconsidering the nomination. --Tyrion1500

Here is another uncited paragraph with malignent intent: "Shiny Toy Guns and Universal Records have continued to re-arrange, re-mix, and re-master the 'We Are Pilots' album and several different mixes/mastered versions have been released utilitzing the same album release date and information as the October 17, 2006 album release, prompting considerable confusion with fans, who believe the sole purpose of these new versions of the "We Are Pilots' album were produced solely for the purpose of generating a sound for Shiny Toy Guns that is Electronic/Dance (GRAMMY award nomination category) as opposed to their original sound which was Indie, Rock, Synth-pop." --Tyrion1500

[edit] Paris Hilton Crap

Theres a reliable source (mtv) and good quotes ("It's false. Absolutely false. My vocals are not on her album," Faye sighed. "I did some dummy tracks with Jeremy, and one of them was a song that was hopefully going to go to this person or that person. I had done that before with some other people, and one song had been made in the vein of, 'Oh, maybe this will go to [Paris].' But it never went outside of that. And that's the bottom line.") from shiny toy guns ppl here http://www.mtv.com/news/yhif/shiny_toy_guns/ i'd stick it in but really busy if anyone wants t add it, that sections a bit messy and the one cite is a gossip website Pledger166 21:50, 1 April 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, I'll add it here shortly. – gRegor (talkcontribs) 01:39, 3 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Popular Culture List

It seems a bit unnecessary to have this list here. It could a) get very, very long and b) include unimportant things. It just seems a bit tedious, and cluttered. --R4wrdinosaur 19:15, 13 May 2007 (UTC)

You're right, a one-off appearance in a random episode of a TV show doesn't really seem notable enough to include. Appearances in popular culture should perhaps be mainly about the band or band members themselves, maybe only including a song if it's the actual main theme tune to a TV show or video game, this sort of info would probably be important enough to be written as a paragraph, rather than a crufty list. Dbam 20:13, 13 May 2007 (UTC)
I third this motion. I've been trying to clean up the list and actually move it to the album page We Are Pilots (v3) as appropriate, but apparently people just keep adding more every time they hear the band on a TV show. Hey, I'm a fan of the band too, but this is encyclopedic information, not a fan site. – gRegor (talkcontribs) 18:45, 7 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Popular Culture List Removal

I'm taking the bold initiative to get rid of this section entirely. Below are summaries for some of the changes, but ultimately I do not believe there should be a list of every appearance on the artist main page. Please discuss. I will revert re-additions of this section unless there is some explanation/discussion about it here.

[edit] Unsourced

Quite simply, these are unsourced. When sourced, they should appear on the We Are Pilots (v3) page instead of here.

  • November 2005: "Chemistry of a Car Crash" is featured on an episode of Guiding Light.
  • Unknown Month 2006: "Don't Cry Out" is used in the snowboard film "In Transit" by Alterna Productions.
  • March 2007: "Turn to Real Life" is used on an episode of Ugly Betty.
  • October 2007: "You Are the One" featured on Private Practice
  • October 2007: "Le Disko" featured on Dirty Sexy Money
  • November 2007: An instrumental version of "Don't Cry Out" used on Waterloo Road.

[edit] Not notable

This Alternavox article is orphaned at the moment and likely will be removed due to not being notable. The song starting off a radio show isn't notable and will only lead to a long list of useless trivia if it's accepted. Also it's unsourced.

  • September 2007: "Le Disko" was the song that launched Alternavox NORTH in Toronto.

[edit] Duplicate

This item already exists on We Are Pilots (v3), where I've made the case that such information should appear.

  • September 2007: "Le Disko" is used in the Motorola Razr2 V8 "MotoRazr2" commercial.

[edit] Moved

First item was moved to We Are Pilots (v3).

Second item I integrated into the History section of this entry.

Third item I integrated into the Slyder entry, since it went from "Neo (The One)" to "You Are the One", not vice versa.

  • 2006: "Le Disko" is used on "One Tree Hill"
  • October 2007: Appearance as guest band on Yo Gabba Gabba
  • October 2001: The lyrics from the chorus of "You are the One" are used in a track called "Neo (The One)", which features on the Rise FM radio station in the video game Grand Theft Auto III. The track was released by Dawson and Petree under their previous alias Slyder.

    • Thanks for taking this initiative. I am glad to see people take a stand against unencyclopedic trivia like this. -NatureBoyMD (talk) 19:13, 21 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Controversy section / Introduction

I re-added the controversy section because I thought it was a relatively important thing to address. Maybe there shouldn't be a "controversy" section, but it could certainly be included in the entry somewhere, not just removed. Or perhaps there's a good explanation for its removal.

I simplified the introductory paragraph again. The wording seemed subjective (and made it sound like their songs are only popular on Myspace) and could easily go on forever in a list as fans add their new favorite songs to the list. Songs that achieve a certain level of popularity can easily be referred to in the article, I'm not suggesting it not be included; I just don't think it's necessary in the introductory line. I like it short and simple, myself, like the Jimmy Eat World entry starts out. What, When, Where. – gRegor (talkcontribs) 06:54, 19 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Carah Faye

Okay, I noticed that someone from synthesizers and bass from Carah Faye's role in the members list. I came on here to discuss it before editing but I noticed that the person who made the change was not logged in so I have no problem changing it back. According to the CD booklet, Carah Faye only does vocals. However, I've been to one of their live concerts and she played bass and snnthesizer on some songs. I will try to find a wikipedia legit source on it, if its possible to even find one. But I know first hand from watching their show that Carah Faye does play these instruments in their shows.Doolkid (talk) 08:18, 16 February 2008 (UTC)

I think it's a pretty minor change, doesn't need a reference per se. I'm pretty sure she only plays bass and synthesizer live, not on recordings, but on a band page it's not specific to "plays live / plays on recordings", so I'm fine with keeping it listed this way. – gRegor (talkcontribs) 00:27, 24 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Enough with the trivia

The band's song being used on My Super Sweet 16 is trivia.

"You Are the One" appearing in multiple video games is trivia (and covered on the We Are Pilots (v3) entry already). Arguably, the reference to the roots being in Slyder's "Neo" is somewhat trivial. It's covered in that entry already, but I left it here after trimming it down because I'm not sure.

Listing a new song they've been playing live lately is also trivia.

I'm not sure if their appearance on Yo Gabba Gabba is trivia or not. It's not a huge media appearance, and I fear leaving it there will encourage people listing more trivia items like the ones I listed above.

Thoughts?

[edit] please fix intro

please add the "from" to what it should read "from Los angeles, CA"... at the intro of the page —Preceding unsigned comment added by Maxalember (talk • contribs) 18:50, 29 February 2008 (UTC)

I took out the "Don't Cry Out" single as it was never released. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.45.21.35 (talk) 16:58, 19 March 2008 (UTC)
