[edit] Moving
I have moved the following content from Category:Cities and towns in India. Perhaps it can be merged into the article. - Mike Rosoft 13:13, 29 May 2005 (UTC)
Shimla
Shimla, the summer capital of the erstwhile British Raj in India, is nestled in the middle Himalyas, in northern India. The city has had a chequered past during the British Raj, and is now the capital of Himachal Pradesh, which is considered to be one of the most progressive states of India. Shimla is dotted with monuments, mainly imposing buildings dating back to the Victorian age, which are often considered as the hallmark of British rule in India. The Kalka-Shimla rail link, one of the few narrow gauge tracks still operational in India, bears testimoney to the indomitable spirit and engineering excellence of the British. Shimla (previously known as Simla) is also home to Bishop Cotton School, the oldest public school in Asia. Originally established to educate the children of British Army officers, the 170 years old institution has a strong network of old students across the globe. The school has contributed a number of professional in every sphere of public life — people have reached the pinnacle of their careers, and in the process have made significant contribution to society. However,General Dyer, the British officer who perpetrated the Jallianwalabagh massacre, remains the most (in)famous personality who has passed through the portals of this esteemed institution.

[edit] Section
I think a re-arrangement of sections of the article and repositioning of pictures at appropriate places would enhance the appearance of the article. Further edits may be added as required. Further, such arrangements on the lines of Featured articles like Goa will be still better. I will try to proceed on these lines - Ok. --Bhadani 9 July 2005 14:05 (UTC)
[edit] Heart of the City
I have removed the following statement from the section Heart of the City: "When you are there, do not miss a coffee at the Park Cafe. It is listed on the international tourist guides. The food here is just as great as the music". This statement though true, does not seem appropriate for an encyclopedia.
[edit] Sports
Shark diving? In the Himalayan foothills? This statement needs explanation/references or it has to go. Colonies Chris 08:59, 22 December 2005 (UTC)
[edit] removed as dubious
The shimla roller skating rink is also an all year round popular place . added by an anon.Mikereichold 08:56, 26 January 2006 (UTC)
[edit] External links
Adding some external links here for future reference. Will add them to mainpage if they actually contain some good info Lost 06:11, 25 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Places of interest
I have moved some of the descriptions and am going to put it in detail in the child pages. These pages already exist so there is no reason to put paragraphs in the main article. Makes it less cluttered and to the point. In addition, there are several more that either need to be added here or created anew. Will keep doing so in the next few days. Please discuss if you have a better format to present this section. gnusbiz 01:08, 4 May 2007 (UTC)
[edit] rewrite
In an endeavour to make this article more along the lines of featured articles on Wikipedia I am going to change the layout. This may include:
- Removing places of interest and creating a separate article, say, tourism in Shimla, with all of the material in child pages and detailed descriptions (this may require deletion of child pages like, Mall road, Shimla etc. I don't feel that that should be a separate page for each of those on an encyclopedia. Any thoughts??)
- Getting more stuff (supported with sources) on Culture, Economy, and Demographics. You can help here!!
- Re-laying and replacing pictures. I may be able to get some better pictures, but that is last priority
- Some other sections like politics, market places, either need to be merged or removed.
Needless to say, if anyone can edit the article as per the suggestions above, that would be great. Please discuss here if you have any more ideas. gnusbiz 18:08, 4 May 2007 (UTC)
- Go ahead and also have a look at other similar featured articles such as Delhi, Mumbai, Kochi etc. Just follow a similar format. All the best for your effort to make it featured. — Lost(talk) 01:42, 5 May 2007 (UTC)

- Great! I'll try to work on the main article then during the next week or so. It'll be nice if you can throw in some links/add missing citations. I should ask you to review some heavy changes as well. Thanks! --- gnusbiz 07:49, 5 May 2007 (UTC)
[edit] review
At this point, a peer review, perhaps, would reveal what else is required/can be improved on this page. Gnusbiz 20:30, 5 June 2007 (UTC)
[edit] references
I am adding these references here for future use. In case anyone wishes to contribute, most of these books should be available in local libraries. gnusbiz 15:41, 14 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Places of Interest
I have added a new section : Places of Interest as there was nothing, i have also added some pictures along with it.

- Not sure if that's a good idea. See [1] for recommended sections by the Indian cities project. Places of interest, if they are very popular, could go into their own respective articles, or in Wikitravel. gnusbiz (talk) 01:03, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
