Sheridan is a city in Yamhill County, Oregon, United States. The population was 3,570 at the 2000 census. The 2006 estimate is 5,785 residents.[3] It was named in honor of the Civil War general Philip Henry Sheridan. General Sheridan was posted to Yamhill County at Fort Yamhill in the latter half of the 1850s.

Sheridan is located at 45°5′54″N, 123°23′50″W (45.098384, -123.397171).[4]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.9 square miles (4.9 km²), of which, 1.9 square miles (4.8 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.1 km²) of it (2.62%) is water.

The city is served by two main roads, Oregon Route 18 and Oregon Route 18 Business. The business route runs through downtown on the north side of the South Yamhill River and connects to Shipley and Willamina, Oregon to the west. The Sheridan Bridge on Bridge Street connects the two sides of the city across the river. Oregon Route 18 connects to McMinnville, the county seat and beyond to the Portland metropolitan area.

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 3,570 people, 1,282 households, and 915 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,909.5 people per square mile (737.1/km²). There were 1,381 housing units at an average density of 738.6/sq mi (285.1/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 87.73% White, 0.34% African American, 4.85% Native American, 0.64% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 3.98% from other races, and 2.38% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 7.68% of the population.

There were 1,282 households out of which 39.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.7% were married couples living together, 13.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.6% were non-families. 22.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.76 and the average family size was 3.20.

In the city the population was spread out with 30.8% under the age of 18, 9.1% from 18 to 24, 28.6% from 25 to 44, 19.5% from 45 to 64, and 12.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 95.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $36,673, and the median income for a family was $39,858. Males had a median income of $31,834 versus $23,233 for females. The per capita income for the city was $13,426. About 9.7% of families and 14.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.9% of those under age 18 and 26.6% of those age 65 or over.

Sheridan is represented by the Sheridan School District, which contains Faulconer-Chapman School (K-8), Sheridan High School (9-12), Opportunity House (9-12), and the Sheridan Japanese School (4-12).

The Delphian School, a private school that utilizes the study methods known as Study Tech that were developed by Church of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard, is located just outside of town.
