Shepody Bay

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Shepody Bay is a 122 km² coastal wetland in New Brunswick, Canada. It was designated a Ramsar wetland of international importance on May 27, 1987,[1] is a globally significant Important Bird Area,[2] and is part of the Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network.[1] It is located about 50 km south of Moncton, at the head of the Bay of Fundy.[3]

The area is a tidal embayment which consists of 77 km² of open water and 40 km² of mudflats, with 4 km² of saline marsh on the west, and eroding sand and gravel beaches covering an area of approximately 1 km² on the eastern shore.[3][1] The intertidal mudflats "support internationally important numbers of the crustacean Corophium volutator, the principle food source for millions of fall migrating shorebirds".[1]
