Biography He was born in Karaj, Tehran, to a Shiite family. After receiving his diploma, he was admitted to the K. I. A. U. (Karaj Islamic Azad University) for B. A. of English literature. He completed his course in 3 years, although the syllabus determines four years for the course. Immediately, he matriculated the same university for the same major in M. A.. He started teaching for some English language institutes and in the gifted education. Shafieyan obtained his Master of Arts degree on "A Formalistic Approach to Paradise Lost Hero Dilemma", as his thesis. Dr. Stanley Fish, one of the fathers of Reader-Response Theory and a Miltonic scholar, who considered Satan as the hero of Paradise Lost, in a letter to Shafieyan wrote about his thesis, "It is very well researched and well written. I am in sympathy with your argument and I especially enjoyed the section on Satan, which seems to me to be very acute. You obviously did great deal of work. Congratulations." It was in the case that Shafieyan's formalistic approach determined God as the hero, opposite to Fish' idea. After that, he took some classes at Teacher's Training University, Karaj campus, and I. R. I. B. (Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting) College. He was accepted for Ph. D. in the same year.
