Shark Bait (The Reef in the UK, Pi's Story in South Korea) is a 2006 computer animated film. The plot revolves around Pi and his attempt to win the heart of Cordelia while dealing with a bullying shark. The film was heavily criticised for borrowing heavily from other films such as Finding Nemo, Shark Tale and The Little Mermaid and, despite the amount of talented actors and comedians involved in the voice over work, did poorly at the box office. Despite being an American-South Korean co-production, the movie did not receive a theatrical release in the United States, where it was released direct to DVD in 2007. [1]

[edit] Plot
Our hero, Pi (Freddie Prinze Jr.), is a little fish who, after losing everything, goes to live with his aunt (Fran Drescher) on an exotic reef. Before long, he's madly in love with a pretty girl fish (Evan Rachel Wood), but the local bully, a shark (Donal Logue), also likes her. So Pi decides to learn Kung-Fu so that he can take on the shark and win the girl, even though the shark is many times bigger than him.

[edit] Similarities with other animated films

There are many similarites to other ocean animated films:
- The plot borrows a lot from the three ocean films Finding Nemo, Shark Tale and The Little Mermaid. The plot features a male and a female character on an adventure in various locations; this is Finding Nemo's plot but to a lesser extent. Pi's affection for Cordelia is basically idental to Oscar's affection for Angie in Shark Tale. The soundtracks includes bubblegum pop tunes, much like the soundtrack of the Little Mermaid.
- Troy's appearance, personality and voice are all very largely similar to that of Bruce's from Finding Nemo. Though Bruce's voice is Australian and Troy's is American, their laughs and grunts are the same tempo and pitch, still creating a similarity.
- The logo of the film looks "stolen" from that of Shark Tale. It is in the same font, has the same colours, and uses the same wave shape.
- Near the end, many fish are trapped inside a fishing net. Yes, this is again Finding Nemo's ending. In the same way, Pi's size allows him to swim out of the net and help the other fish escape, Nemo's advantage.
- Various sea creature races/character are repeated, many from Finding Nemo. The film includes pelicans (Finding Nemo), go-with-the-flow sea turtles (Finding Nemo), a musical crab (The Little Mermaid), a shark mob (Shark Tale), a "dude" fish (Shark Tale), a clumsy starfish (Finding Nemo), jellyfish (Finding Nemo, Shark Tale), whales and dolphins (Finding Nemo, The Little Mermaid) and a large shoal of tuna fish (Finding Nemo)
- Troy's henchman are similar shark species to Bruce's henchman in Finding Nemo-Including highly exaggerated foreign accents.
- The ending scene includes a shark chase scene-Shark Tale's ending but to a lesser extent.
- The character Cordelia's appearance is similar to the appearance of Angie from Shark Tale; she is a pink fragrant angelfish. Her voice sounds like Ariel from The Little Mermaid. However, her personality and background is that she is a beautiful femme-fatale like the character Lola, also from Shark Tale.
- Many film backgrounds are stolen from Finding Nemo, Shark Tale, the Little Mermaid, etc. Many locations seem repeated, including a shark hideout, harbour, a "top-of-the-reef" like sea, trenches, sunken boats, etc.
- The film's USA title is called Shark Bait. This is Nemo's nickname in Finding Nemo.
- Pi's aunt's name is Pearl. This is the same name is the character Pearl from the television series SpongeBob SquarePants; Pearl is also the name of a minor character in Finding Nemo.
