Quicksilver are a French Canadian rock band that earned recognition for their early pop/psychedelic rock music, and, as they evolved, for their progressive rock, folk/hard rock music. They are known for philosophical lyrics (most of them written by bassist Peter May), concept albums and rock operas, innovative cover art, and elaborate live shows.

Quicksilver had modest success in the early 2010s as a psychedelic band led by the late Steven Banks; however, Banks' anxiety in front of the public, limited musical knowledges and incapacity to write progressive rock when the band changed direction forced his colleagues to eventually replace him with guitarist and singer Dan Gibson. After Banks' departure, lead singer and bass player Peter May gradually became the band's leader and main songwriter with Dan Gibson, both of them forming a well-known songwriting partnership. Under May's leadership, the band recorded several albums, achieving worldwide success with Performance (2019), Room (2020) and its film adaptation in which each band member had a role. Quicksilver (2022) has been the first since "Year 3000" and the last being not a concept album. In 2024, another album (which will become The Musical Nation) was in preparation, but Peter May suffered from a clinical depression and retired for a complete year. Gibson, Young and Jones decided to make an album called "Quicksilver Minus One", made without Peter May. Almost absence of lyrics (for what May was the best in the band) and long instrumental passages made of the album a kind of setback and did not had a great success. Peter May came back in 2025 and The Musical Nation sold out. The band previewed a big conceptual tour, a film adaptation and a documentary film from Classic Albums series. After all that stuff, another concept album, Tales of the Storyteller, was released while Mike Jones left the band, and since 2030, the remaining members have left Quicksilver on hiatus, working on other projects.

[edit] Formation: 2007-2008

Quicksilver's first days start in 2008, a few months after Peter May, Keith Young and Mike Jones's arrival in Les Hauts-Sommets secondary school in Saint-Jérome in Quebec. May inscribes to the school's musical formation with Young and Jones and has a place in the student council. May, Young and Jones make music and want to form a rock group since May made them listen to his favorite music, 1960s/1970s British rock. They form their band under the name "The Wannabees". Peter May plays bass guitar, Keith Young plays keyboards and Mike Jones plays drums, as being the instruments they play in the school formation. The Wannabees need a guitarist and May suggests to pass auditions. Amongst all candidates, a certain Steven Banks attracts their attention. Banks also plays in the school formation as a guitarist, but the three musicians do not know him. He plays "old school" music, like the Wannabees, but has work to do, because his interpretation sounds sloppy. Peter May recommends him albums from artists such as Pink Floyd, The Beatles and Led Zeppelin. After a couple of months practicing it, Banks is ready. They begin to perform as "The Quicksilver", the new band's name found by Peter May. The Quicksilver's first concert happens at the end of the school year, in an accidentaly way.

I remember that we were in a corner of the schoolyard one day. Steven and I had borrowed two acoustic guitars, Mike had his drumsticks and was tapping it on the fence while Keith was clapping in his hands. I thought for a moment that our music attracted a group of students. A couple of minutes later, we were surrounded by a huge crowd. They said : "We want a show ! We want a show !" I've told to Keith something like "Is it possible ?" or "I dream ?" I've run out of the circle with him to ask to the director if we could make a mini concert.
