Detail of eastern span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge showing obsolete lattice beams. This entire portion is to be replaced
These are hot riveted, which results in a relatively soft join which may fail under extreme stress. In the western span most of these have been removed and replaced with high strength bolts. In addition the lattice angle iron pieces have been replaced with steel plate.
To the left of the image the more distant steel eyebar rods without lacing are resisting only tension; they are the major tensile elements of one of the two cantilever structures.
Above, the deep beams support the upper deck. When the bridge was converted to five lanes in each direction these beams were strengthened to support the additional weight of trucks. A small portion of the lower chord reenforcement may be seen at the bottom of the two beams in the image.
See Image:SFOakBBRetrofit.jpg for modifications made to the western span.
