SEWA

SEWA is the Self-Employed Women's Association of India, a trade union founded in 1972 after a split in the Textile Labour Association (TLA). It was founded by civil rights leader Dr. Ela Bhatt.

It seeks to provide financial security for its members, while at the same time campaigning for social change based on Gandhian principles. SEWA is comprised of the unorganized sector of India's economy and its goal is to for full- employment and self- reliance for women.

SEWA received the Right Livelihood Award in 1984.

According to provisional statistics from the Ministry of Labour, SEWA had a membership of 606935 in 2002.[1]
