[edit] Proper name transliteration

I question the move to Sergeij Alejnikov from Sergei Aleinikov. On most of the websites referenced in the actual article (uefa.com, etc) his name is spelled as Sergei Aleinikov. I am not convinced that an Italian language newspaper (albeit an established one) is a guide to go by. His name is Cyrillic, and thus has been transliterated into English as Sergei Aleinikov. If there are no disagreements I will revert the edits back to Sergei Aleinikov. —Stochil 13:47, 2 August 2007 (UTC)

Andrei is Cyrilic but is spelled as Andrij -as Sergeij- o Andri. Cruijff is from Netherlands butt is written as Cruyff. --200.106.30.165 21:23, 3 August 2007 (UTC)

Can you point to a specific reference on Wikipedia of that? Specifically that of a Soviet born, Belorussian person named Sergei who's name is written Sergeij? As far as I can tell, his name Sergei, should follow either the Cyrillic transliteration rules or Belorussian rules (since he is Belorussian). Look at this list of Belorussian players: Belarus national football team; all of the Sergeis there are spelled Sergei. Your example, Andrij, is mainly the way a Ukrainian name is transilterated, so I don't think it is completely relavant. The Cruijff example is Dutch, which linguistically has no relationship to this discussion at all. —Stochil 01:53, 4 August 2007 (UTC)

Unless someone gives a good reason why it should stay, I will move this article back to Sergei Aleinikov within a few days. For my reasoning behind this please read this and Wikipedia:Naming conventions (use English).
