Talk:Serbian surnames
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Divac je cincarsko prezime! Nije srpsko.

[edit] List
"Not all names listed here are of Serbian origin however these names are found in Serbia today." This is a very importnat point and should be left in. Jagoda 1 02:24, 21 February 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Wikipedia is not a directory
Nexmod, you keep on returning the list to the article; however, I assert that this is highly unenclopedic contents, and I'll now explain why:
- WP:NOT#DIRECTORY says that "Wikipedia articles are not... Genealogical entries or phonebook entries. Biography articles should only be for people with some sort of fame, achievement, or perhaps notoriety."
- I estimate that the number of Serbian surnames is in the order of magnitude of 10,000--100,000. This list is, therefore, bound to be incomplete, and bound to be vague (what exactly constitutes a "Serbian surname"? Does e.g. Đorđe Weifert have an "Serbian surname"?). This article is becoming either a vanity list, or a directory (Serbian white pages are over there).
- Why should we need this list to create articles about surnames? First, Wikipedia, per the same WP:NOT clause, does not have the surname articles in general, except for:
- Disambiguation pages, where there are several notable people sharing the surname, and
- Particularly frequent and notable surnames (e.g. Smith (surname))
- If you need to create an article on surname/disambiguation, because there are notable people of this surname, go ahead and create it. You don't need an oversized, unencyclopedic list to do that
- Finally, numerous similar lists have been deleted thus far; I can dig out the AfDs if you wish. There is certainly room to explain the etymology and frequency of Serbian surnames (see the references section of this article), but the list is unnecessary. Duja► 08:30, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
