The purpose of this short article on Selenomonas is to stimulate interest and research on these unusual complex protists. It is almost certain that the group will someday be split (perhaps at family or higher level) as a result of future research - the published morphological distinctions are alone sufficient reasons for that. What is presently lacking is genetic analysis of the genus; modern separation techniques should allow the selection of single cells from rumen fluid, so this already looks feasible.
