Category talk:Secessionist organizations
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Either this category is misnamed or most of the articles in it shouldn't be there. Secession is withdrawal from a federation. If Brittany became independent from France, that wouldn't be secession, because France is a unitary state, not a federal state. Again, Britain is a unitary state from a constitutional point of view - Scotland has its own parliament but legally no sovereignty - so Scottish independence wouldn't constitute secession. Nor, in my view, would Basque or Catalan independence from Spain be secession. Manx independence would certainly not be secession because Man isn't a part of the UK in any event, so even if independence from the UK could be classified as secession, which it can't, this wouldn't be it. How about "List of Independence Movements" or "List of Pro-Independence Organizations"? "Separatism" would cover almost everything on the list (though perhaps not the Isle of Man because, as stated, although under the British Crown, it isn't part of the UK so wouldn't be separating if it became independent), but "separatism" is sometimes taken to be a pejorative, so "independence movements" is probably the best one can do. Apart from the US-based organizations, very little on the list could be legitimately be classed as secessionist. RichardQ 10:19, 15 May 2005 (UTC)
