When Google Street View was launched less than a year ago, it did not catch my attention too much, mostly because it was limited to 5 cities, and the only one of these cities I have visited a lot was New York. But within five months, 10 more cities were added, thereby making it look more appealing. Then, in October, an article on SV appeared, though I did not notice it immediately, or make any edits on it until January 2008.
As a Baltimore resident and Washington, DC native, I have been anxiouly waiting for SV to be provided in the Baltimore, and Washington areas, and for other nearby areas to be included. I am unsure of the exact reason these cities have had to wait so long while smaller places like Idaho and Alaska have gotten it sooner, but rumors that I have heard, some of that have been published like fact on Wikipedia, point to this having something to do with National Security. Though this sounds plausible, I have not found any sites that have positively confirmed this as the truth.
The closest are to Baltimore that has SV is Philadelphia, and along with it comes a large section of Delaware, which dips into the northeast corner of Maryland, covering a few streets there. The next to closest locations now available are Richmond, New York, and Pittsburgh.
