Seascale

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Seascale is a beach-resort and village in the county of Cumbria, England. Although the place-name indicates that it was inhabited by Norse settlers, probably before 1000 AD, the community remained insignificant until the development of a railway line along the coast from Whitehaven to Barrow in Furness in Victorian times, following which, in the 1850s, it was developed as a seaside resort. It was further developed from the 1940s onward as a dormitory community for the nearby Windscale and Calder Hall nuclear sites (later combined as Sellafield). As a result, in the 1950s it was known as "the brainiest town in Britain".

The village is close to the A595 trunk road and is still served by Seascale railway station on what is now called the Cumbrian Coast Line.
