Sean Archer is a fictional character and the main protagonist in Face/Off. He is portrayed by John Travolta and Nicolas Cage.

[edit] Early years
While riding in an amusement park, Archer's nemesis Castor Troy is making an assassination on him. However, he survives the shot from the sniper rifle which ended up his younger son, Michael being killed.

Since his son's death, Sean becomes obsessive to capture Castor. He was informed by his friend, Tito, that Pollux, Castor's paranoid younger brother, is buying the place. He goes to stop the plane, knowing that Pollux doesn't leave L.A. without Castor. Archer and the FBI intervened to stop him. Archer manages to shoot the engines on the plane to stop Castor from leaving. He confronts Castor inside the airfield. The two finally meet face-to-face. Castor tells Archer that he planted the bomb at L.A. Archer uses the plane engine to sent Castor flying and knocked out.

After capturing Castor, Archer realized that Castor isn't joking about the bomb. Pollux is the only one who knows where the bomb is but with his paranoia, he refuses to tell the FBI the location. One of his friends, Dr. Hollis Miller, suggests to switch identities with Castor. She takes him to hospital showing Castor survive the attack but left him comatose. Archer gets greeted by Dr. Malcolm Walsh, the doctor responsible for the operation. With his face switched, Archer goes to Erehwon prison to interrogate Pollux. He successfully manages to get the location of the bomb from Pollux. Unfortunately, Castor wakes up from his coma and killed the people who know the mission such as Miller, Tito, and Walsh, but not before he gets Archer's face. He visits Archer who reveals his plan to abuse his government job and to make love with his wife, Eve. Archer escapes Erehwon and goes to Dietrich's apartment. In the apartment, he makes love with Sasha, Castor's girlfriend, and finds out that Castor has a son, Adam. Suddenly, Castor led the FBI to kill Archer. Archer unmasks one of the FBI, revealing to be one of his friends, Buzz. He fakes Buzz's death by tossing him aside and make a shot in the other side. He kills Pollux by making him fall from the rooftop. Archer goes back to his house and tries to tell Eve that he is really Archer but fails but not before he tells her to analyze Castor's blood. When getting to the hospital, Eve still doesn't believe but when Archer tells a story how they got their first kiss, she discovers the truth.

Archer confronts Castor at Lazaro's funeral. Castor has his men take captive of Archer's wife and daughter. He reveals to Archer that Michael's death is accidental, as he only wanted to kill Archer. The gunfight killed Sasha but not before she tells Archer to take care of Adam, which he agrees. A fight at the boat ensues and the two landed to the pier. Archer kills Castor by shooting the harpoon to him.

The FBI arrives and they know that Archer is Castor because Eve has explained everything to them. Archer gets taken to the hospital and his face is restored. He is reunited with Eve and Jamie and adopts Adam, Castor's son, to the family.
