Seam (metallurgy)

Seaming in metallurgy is the process of joining two edges of materials through bending repeatedly. Common reasons for seaming is not only to better define the appearance of a part, but also to hide the burrs and the rough edges. Hems are used to hide the burrs by folding the material over and under to hide rough edges. Common uses for seaming are in the food industry (canned goods), theme park industry (cars of rides), and in the automotive industry (hiding rough edges on sides or using seamed glass). All of these are used for safety measures mostly, so that a person does not cut himself, whether it be from opening a can of soup to holding onto the edges of a roller coaster.
