Behind the buildings. This shot is taken from south of downtown and the space needle is north of downtown. Actually it is quite far away from the downtown core. The photos of the space needle are generally taken from Queen Anne hill, which is close to the space needle and far away from the downtown buildings and therefore makes it look bigger than it actually is.
