[edit] SPAM

All of your edits appear to be promotional links. I am in the process of removing everything you have added. Please stop using Wikipdia for promotion. AndyJones 18:58, 7 September 2007 (UTC)

Response to Andy Jones from Sarah Durrant 10/9:

It is true that the links I created last week are to commercial products - as long as your definition of the same extends to learned books. I thought that such links would be acceptable as they are academic, learned texts from a reputable academic publisher which seek to further understanding of the subject matter.

On a separate note, I find it to be entirely contrary to the collaborative spirit of Wikipedia that you unilaterally decided to remove my entries without first consulting me. For example, there may have been be a straightforward way of modifying my entries to make the ISBNs resolve to the Wikipedia WorldCat rather than the publisher's site. I've been watching this little spat. As far as I can see, provided it is relevant to the topic, there is no objection to your listing a book – typically in a format such as: Author surname, Forename, Title, Publisher, Year, ISBN. However linking to a publisher's web page is generally seen as a step too far (except if the book itself were the topic of the page). Nunquam Dormio 14:32, 10 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Spam notice

Please do not add inappropriate external links to Wikipedia, as you did to Chamber music‎. Wikipedia is not a mere directory of links, nor should it be used for advertising or promotion. Inappropriate links include (but are not limited to) links to personal web sites, links to web sites with which you are affiliated, and links that attract visitors to a web site or promote a product. See the external links guideline and spam policy for further explanations. Since Wikipedia uses nofollow tags, external links do not alter search engine rankings. If you feel the link should be added to the article, then please discuss it on the article's talk page rather than re-adding it. Thank you. --Mperry 19:36, 7 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Final Warning

I see that you added a promotional link to William Shakespeare, even though you have been warned twice to stop. This is your third and final warning. If you continue to use wikipedia for promotion I will continue to revert your edits and I will request that you are blocked.

Note that Nunquam Dormio above is wrong. Promotion does not cease to be promotion just because there is no external link. If you edit in the way he or she suggests, I will continue to revert your edits and I will request that you are blocked. AndyJones 19:14, 10 September 2007 (UTC)

First of all AndyJones, one Wikipedia principle is to assume good faith. It is clear that Sarah Durrant is a novice editor and the reasonableness of her comments above suggests someone who needs guidance rather than knee-capping. Secondly, each edit should be taken on a case-by-case basis. For example, as far as I can see, there is only one book in print about Edgard Varèse, so information about another would be of value to someone interested in his life. Blanket reversion of her edits in an edit war as you threaten above is just as likely to rebound on you. I suggest that before you embark on an edit war you should take a look at the the Wikipedia:Resolving disputes page and choose a low-level dispute resolution process. I shall continue to monitor this spat. Nunquam Dormio 20:15, 10 September 2007 (UTC)

From SD to user AndyJones; As you will be aware, Wikipedia struggles to maintain a reputation as a credible information resource; I had hoped links to relevant, scholarly, peer-reviewed books might be as helpful to Wikipedia as they would be useful to its readers. I will refrain from placing further links; to be clear, this is because I do not have time to create links so that you can remove them and not because I agree with your position. My thanks to user Nunquam Dormio for his/her very reasonable and regrettably necessary calming remarks.[Sarah Durrant; 11th September].

In view of Nunquam Dormio's concerns I've agreed to step back from this issue, and I've asked him/her to keep an eye on it. AndyJones 12:18, 11 September 2007 (UTC)
