PERSIAN GULF (March 17, 2008) Aviation Boatswain's Mate Handling 3rd Class Alex Dieringer holds "FOD," a screech owl, in the flight deck control center onboard the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75). FOD was found resting in the wheel well of an F/A 18 Hornet, during a routine pre-flight inspection. Truman and embarked Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 3 are underway on a regularly scheduled deployment in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom, Enduring Freedom and Maritime Security Operations (MSO). MSO help set the conditions for security and stability in the maritime environment and complements the counter-terrorism and security efforts in regional nation's littoral waters. Coalition forces also conduct MSO under international maritime conventions to ensure security and safety in international waters so that commercial shipping and fishing can occur safely in the region.
