If Mr Shaik is cleared, the government will breathe a huge sigh of relief.

But if he is found guilty, then history could judge the Shaik trial as a defining moment in South Africa's young democracy: Is South Africa to be a place where high officials can keep their reputation intact, regardless of association with sleaze? [1]
