User talk:Scetoaux/Admin coaching

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hi Scetoaux and Mal,

I hope you two don't mind my jumping in on your Admin Coaching, but I don't like to see admin coachees fail---especially after what on first review appears to be a solid session of admin coaching. That being said, let me give some input. I hope you two don't mind and it is not intended as a slight.

First, take a look at my essays, The Admin Coach and How to pass an RfA.

Second, while Mal did a good job at asking questions, I would have liked to have seen some more feedback on the answers.

Third, the way I approach admin coaching is that it is a long term editor review. One of the jobs of the coach is to review the edits/contributions of the coachee. What is the coachee doing strong/weak? How can the coachee improve?

Fourth, one of the things I noticed is that you had Scetoaux do some exercises such as participate in a few XfD's, IMHO it would be better have this be part of an ongoing assignment. Have him participate in 3-5 XfD's per day for a month or two and he will benefit more than by participating in a handful of specific one. I also as my coachees to establish a footprint in an "adminly area" or two. I want them to be around an area long enough and in enough detail that they understand the area they are contributing to. I NEVER ask them to participate in RfA's---doing so is actually, IMHO, counter productive---it comes off as gaming the system. I will ask them to start watching it shortly before they are ready so that they have some idea as to what they are in for, but I would rather them develop a footprint else where.

Finally, as the coach, I believe you should assess the candidate in a final 'review.' Critique them as they might be critiqued in an RfA and address their strengths/weaknesses. I honestly think that if you looked at Scetoaux fresh, you might have seen some of the obstacles that hit him head on in his RfA.

Again, I am offering this input because I do believe that Mal did a good job overall, better IMHO than most coaches. I am hoping that this feedback helps him to become a better coach! We need quality coaches like I believe Mal can be!Balloonman (talk) 05:23, 21 May 2008 (UTC)

IMO, the only problem with his RFA was that we didn't wait another month or two. I have to go now, but I'll think about this. Malinaccier Public (talk) 12:33, 21 May 2008 (UTC)
That is probably true, another month or two would have alleved most, if not all of the criticisms. But that goes towards the final review---looking at the candidate with virgin eyes to see what you might be missing as a person who has gotten involved with the candidate. Again, I think you did a great job, and am very impressed with what you did here. I just hate seeing coaching candidates fail :( Balloonman (talk) 14:30, 21 May 2008 (UTC)
