Talk:Sayoni
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hi, I'm a member of Sayoni, and it's a well-known queer women's portal in the Singapore GLBT community. It may not seem popular or widely known perhaps because women in the community tend to move in a tighter circle, and communication within the community is centered on SiGNeL and Redqueen mailing lists; also, Sayoni events are private to preserve the confidentiality of members especially those who may not be out. I would like this article to be preserved to let more people know more about women in the local GLBT community and let more queer women know of this platform for social support and interaction. Thank you very much! - User: Serilda
- Hi Serilda. I didn't create the article or post the "notability tag", so I sympathize with the need to have a wider body of articles on the LGBT minority in Singapore, but since WP tends to rely more upon third-party mention as a source of notability to keep up an article, I'm trying as hard as I can to find any detailed discussion of Sayoni on pages through Google search. I'm not turning up anything, which is why the others are intent upon getting rid of the article. My personal opinion on this matter is that they should make a "soft redirect" of this article to the LGBT wiki on Wikia, since that is what they tend to do with most articles that are "not notable enough" for Wikipedia. Sorry that they'll end up deleting the article on Wikipedia, though. --Toussaint 06:21, 19 May 2008 (UTC)
[edit] 3rd party mention? not likely
"WP tends to rely more upon third-party mention as a source of notability to keep up an article"
if this third-party mention possibly refers to official references in singapore, it is my belief that, generally, mention of local LGBT groups and promotion of their presence would not be commonplace.
sayoni is a quiet, peace-loving forum by which like-minded people may network, or for others around the world to network with the local community, even before they set foot in singapore. as it was mentioned that googling doesn't turn up much on sayoni, wiki might be an alternative source. if wiki decides that sayoni is to be deleted from the main pages, it would be great if it still had some presence on the LGBT pages. at least it could be found and others would be aware that sayoni exists.
