"Say, Brothers" from Hymn and Tune Book of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, Round Note Edition, Nashville, TN (1889, reprinted 1903).
This tune is the predecessor of both John Brown's Body and the Battle Hymn of the Republic.
The tune and words were created as folk music in the camp meeting atmosphere of mid 1850s United States. William Steffe (1830-1890) was the first to collect, arrange, and publish the words and tune.
