Satna got its name from the name of popular rishi called "Sanatan Muni" of ancient times of ramayan period.A great history is associated with this place.

It was previously a British station, the headquarters of the political agent for Baghelkhand.

Nearby, at Bharhut, are the remains of a 2nd century BC Buddhist stupa, first discovered in 1873

As of 2001 India census[2], Satna had a population of 225,468. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Satna has an average literacy rate of 70%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 76%, and female literacy is 62%. In Satna, 15% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Satna's industries include cement manufacturing, hand loom weaving, flour, oilseed milling, and the distribution of agricultural and fabric products via road and rail junction. The Asia's biggest cement factory known as "Prism Cement" is in Satna. It is also home to one of the leading cables manufacturer of India, "Universal Cables Limited".

The nearest Airport is at Khajuraho which is approximately 120 kilometres from Satna connected through Chhatarpur- Satna Road.

Satna is well connected by train to almost all major cities of the countries. It is on the one of the most busy routes(Mumbai-Howrah Train route) of India. This is also a disel depot for the Western Central Railway. It is connected via the longest National Highway(NH-7)

A couple of state highways and a national highway make it well connected by roads too.

Satna has got a literacy rate of 65.48%. There are several college campuses of the Awadesh Pratap Singh University in the city. It has got two engineering college name VITS and also a new engineering college name as Aditya College of Technology & Science estiblished in year 2007 offering BE in IT/CS/Me/EC courses. The Aditya College of Technology & Science satna is promoted by NRI. One of the famous Hindi medium school is "Saraswati Higher Secondary School". There is DATACARE Institute of information Technology Affiliated institute of Makhanlal University bhopal.

Satna district is proud to have two major religious tourist Chitrakoot and Maihar. Satna district is also proud to have an ancient city of Buddhist culture named 'Bharhut', whose archeological remains have been gifted to the major museums in the country and the world. Tulsi museum at Ram Van has many unique artistic sculptures of ancient times found in this area. Lord Shiva Temple at Birsinghpur is also a famous and old temple in the region. It also have a historical place named 'Ramvan' about 16 km. away from city. There is a unique 16 feet statue of Hanuman ji. The majority of the population speaks Hindi.
