[edit] Editing Sara Bareilles
Bigger issue: where does this nonsense about her having 'no formal training in piano or voice' come from? She comes from an affluent family and went to college so she obviously took piano lessons, and the article even states she was in the school choir. Both of those are formal training. It seems the original source for this was her bio, which is now a dead link, but even if it were live it's obviously a complete falsehood.
Equating a middle-class upbringing with "obvious piano lessons" is a stretch - in this interview she states the most she took were a few lessons in second grade. Also, I'm not sure how you can say time in the school choir is formal training, since that does not involve one-on-one instruction. She's stated in interviews (example) that she didn't receive private voice lessons growing up, and has only gotten a teacher recently to increase the stamina of her voice. That interview also discusses how she reads music, which makes sense if you parse the structure of her songs. Even if you didn't believe her statement that she hasn't received piano lessons, studying her output demonstrates that she relies on a very broad chord-based style of composition. In any case, it might be fairer to change the above statement to "little" formal training, since it's not like she's never taken any lessons whatsoever, but it's hardly a complete falsehood to say she's picked up the majority by ear. [edit] Genghis Cohen
I recently changed the name of the restaurant referenced in this article from "Genghis Khan" to "Genghis Cohen." I know this seems incorrect, but it is a Chinese restaurant in a Jewish neighborhood, and thus it is called Genghis Cohen.
