Sarah Orne Jewett House, built in 1774, is a historic house in South Berwick, Maine, USA. It was the home of the writer Sarah Orne Jewett, who spent much of her life in this Georgian residence, which was owned by her family since 1819. The view from her desk in the second-floor hall looks over the town's major intersection and provided her with material for her books, such as The Country of the Pointed Firs, which accurately describe the character of the Maine countryside and seacoast.
In decorating the house for their own use, Miss Jewett and her sister demonstrated a pride in their family's history as well as their own independent tastes. The result is an eclectic mix of 18th-century architecture, antiques, and wallpapers, with furnishings showing the influence of the Arts and Crafts movement.
Sarah Orne Jewett was involved in preservation of the Hamilton House, a house that she used as a the setting for her historical romance, The Tory Lover. Jewett House is now owned and operated by Historic New England and is a US National Historic Landmark.
