From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A simfile is a add-on for a music video game simulator, such as StepMania or Dance With Intensity. The term "simfile" is a portmanteau of "simulation" and "file". The term is actually something of a misnomer, as the word is typically used to refer to a package consisting of multiple files, usually distributed as a .ZIP file.
[edit] Construction
As simfiles are used in music video game simulators, a simfile will contain an audio file of a certain song (usually .WAV or .MP3 format), and a file that controls the actual simulation of gameplay. This second file on its own can also be called a simfile; consequently, the context in which the word is used denotes whether the speaker is referring to this specific file, or the package in which it was included. A set of graphics for use by the simulator is often included in the simfile package, denoting the song name and usually the name of the song's performing artist as well.
[edit] Common File Formats
- .SM - used by the popular Stepmania simulator.
- .DWI - used by the Dance With Intensity simulator, though this format can also be used by Stepmania.
- .BMS/.BME - used by beatmania simulators such as bemaniaDX or BM98
