Sanford A. Moeller

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sanford A. Moeller was an American rudimental snare drummer, author, and educator (1886 - 1960). He is usually associated with the (so called) Moeller method, which advocates utilizing 'ancient' snare drumming techniques when playing a drum set. His influence on the early jazz drummers, such as Gene Krupa, is well known.

Moeller based his lessons and instruction around a playing style (open rolls) used by drummers who had served in the American Civil War. He was also a 'drum builder', and made several deep marching snares and matching bass drums. His drums are still being played by marching organizations each year.

In 1925, he compiled and wrote "The Moeller Book: The Art of Snare Drumming". His book was reprinted in June 1950 by Leedy and Ludwig ... followed by - 1956 Copyright assigned to Ludwig Drum Company...followed by - 1982 Copyright assigned to Ludwig Music Publishing Company.

Moeller is also closely associated with American drummer Jim Chapin, who studied under him directly.
