San Gabriel High School serves a multi-ethnic student population of approximately 2,555 students.

[edit] Dance Teams

SGHS has a Drill Team, which was originally started in the 1960's, and a Choreo Dance Team, which was started in the late 1980's by retired P.E. teacher Rose Steinhour. In the past, both teams have been especially successful in various regional and national dance/drill team competitions, winning many first place trophys. In 1994, the Choreo Dance Team won 1st place in the Novelty division at the Miss Dance Drill Team USA Nationals Pagent by performing a routine wearing frog costumes. In 2002, the Drill Team won 1st place in Military Precision at the Miss Dance Drill Team USA Nationals Pageant with perfect scores of 100 from all 3 judges. The Drill Team was subsequently invited to represent the United States at the Miss Dance Drill Team International Pageant in Japan.

On March 16, 2007, KISS FM held a concert for San Gabriel High School. Lloyd, an R&B singer, made a special guest appearance by performing his two hit singles "You" and "Get It Shawty" in front of the students. The artist’s performance was followed by Baby Bash and Nick Cannon’s two hit singles "Gigolo" and "Dimepiece".

Elton Brand, professional NBA basketball player and star forward for the Los Angeles Clippers, made a special appearance at San Gabriel High School library to spend time interacting and reading books to students. He spoke with young students about the success and value of reading.

On November 2, 2007, Fox 11 news came to San Gabriel High School to film the varsity football team play against the Montebello Oilers.

  • David Henry Hwang - class of '75 - Tony Award-winning author of "M. Butterfly" in 1988 (Best Play); and Tony nominee for Best Play in 1998 for "Golden Child" and the revival of "Flower Drum Song" in 2003.
  • Danny Patterson - class of '89 - Pitcher for the Texas Rangers (1996-99) and Detroit Tigers (2000-04)
  • John Grabow - class of '97 - major league baseball pitcher.
