Instead of footnotes, why not have notes that work as roll-overs.

Here is an example: This is my foot note text. It appears only when you postion your pointer over the blue dot. It can be as long as it needs to be. No need to teach anyone how to program footnotes. This is really easy to do..

This system could also be done with a template. The template {{*}} is a very easy way to create rollovers with text boxes. To use this template, you just have to type:

{{*|This is the text that you want to appear.}}

and this is what it will look like: This is the text that you want to appear.

This is really simple to use, and would encourage more footnoting (or should I say citations).
