As I understand the order of his military promotions, Carter received his brevet promotion during the Civil War as brigadier general in the U.S. Army. Carter's promotion to Rear Admiral within the U.S. Navy was following the Civil War. 4.129.70.20 16:23, 22 February 2007 (UTC)
