[edit] Hall i'th Wood

or the Hall-i'-th'-Wood (pronounced Al-i-thwood)

  • I have asked around and no one else that I have found from Bolton recognises that pronunciation. The answer below sums out the pronunciation quite well.
'Al' suggests a short 'A' as in Al Jolson, which would be quite wrong.
The 'A' is long as in All. The aitch is sometimes dropped, but nowadays generally not, in my experience.
Also the grouping suggest the wrong arrangement of syllables.
The name is pronounced as a two-syllable word with the stress on the first syllable:
Hallith/wood

Has anyone found any evidence of the suggested pronounciation (Al-i-thwood)? If not then can it be removed or corrected? --jmb 06:33, 9 June 2007 (UTC)
