    [edit] Inaccurate text

    Fixed: Sammy Seminole was the "only" mascot; this is clearly incorrect as "Chief Fullabull" was also used during the same period. Several misspellings fixed as well, blanked category restored, and sourced paragraph about Chief Fullabull restored. Badagnani (talk) 18:26, 15 April 2008 (UTC)

    After leaders of the Seminole Tribe of Florida learned of the mascots, they visited the campus in 1972 where they attended a basketball game, and expressed their concern to the university regarding the Chief Fullabull mascot.[1] Both mascots were retired that year.[2]

    [edit] Blanking of "white"

    The blanking of "white" is not helpful for the encyclopedic quality of the article because there is a long history of Americans of European descent impersonating American Indians--as in the case of FSU's former mascots, sometimes respectfully, and sometimes ignorantly. The ethnicity is important because actual Native Americans were not portraying Sammy Seminole in the way early minstrel show performers were European Americans portraying African Americans. A complete understanding of Sammy Seminole is impossible unless this is made clear--and the blanking of the text regarding the Seminole Tribe leaders' visit to FSU to witness the previous basketball mascot in action similarly makes it impossible to present a truly encyclopedic treatment of this subject. Neither did African Americans portray Sammy Seminole because the legendary Doak Campbell did (in)famously comment that black athletes would play in the FSU stadium only "over his dead body." Such issues should not be glossed over--or, in fact, be willfully blanked from articles--simply because of editors' love for this team. Badagnani (talk) 22:57, 15 April 2008 (UTC)

    [edit] Change from "mascot" to "symbol"

    Regarding this edit, the use of "symbol" as opposed to "mascot" for the student dressed as Osceola is idiosyncratic and arose from the University of Illinois's efforts to avoid NCAA sanction for its use of Native American imagery, and it seems that FSU has adopted a similarly evasive use of language. In fact, Chief Osceola and Renegade are mascots in the general usage of the word, and, as such, the term "mascots" should be restored, although qualified by an explanation of the origin and usage of the wording "symbol." Conventional English usage would dictate that a "symbol" is a usually 2-dimensional representation used on letterhead, apparel, and similar items, while the actual corporeal being of a student dressed in costume and performing in some manner at sporting events is a "mascot."     The use of the term "only" in the lead is idiosyncratic and unnecessary, yet it has been reintroduced three times now. What is the need for this word in the lead? Most universities have only a single mascot, thus the use of the word "only" does not serve to distinguish FSU from other universities; in fact, quite the opposite.
