Samurai X: The Motion Picture is known in Japan as Ishin Shishi he no Requiem (―維新志士への鎮魂歌 Requiem for the Ishin Patriots?). The full Japanese name is Rurouni Kenshin - Meiji Kenkyaku Roumantan - Ishin Shishi he no Rekuiemu (るろうに剣心―明治剣客浪漫譚―維新志士への鎮魂歌?) and was released under Samurai X: The Motion Picture in the English language.

Himura Kenshin and the rest of the gang meets a samurai named Takimi Shigure in Yokohama during a fight with some sailors. They rescue a girl named Takatsuki Toki, the sister of Tatsuki Gensatsu who the Battosai killed in the revolution overthrowing the Tokugawa shogunate. That night, Shigure only caught a glimpse of his best friends killer. Now, Shigure is trying to start a revolution to overthrow the Meiji government as he believes the government does not distribute enough wealth among the population.

  • Himura Kenshin (Kenshin Himura) also known as Hitokiri Battōsai.
  • Kamiya Kaoru (Kaoru Kamiya), master of the Kamiya Kasshin Ryu.
  • Myojin Yahiko (Yahiko Myojin), apprentice of Kamiya Kaoru. His father was killed in the Boshin war.
  • Sagara Sanosuke (Sanosuke Sagara), an ex-fighter for hire, also know under the name of Zanza.
  • Takatsuki Toki, sister of Gentatsu and close friend of Shigure.
  • Takatsuki Gentatsu, close friend of Shigure, was killed by Kenshin during the end of the Tokugawa Shogunate.
  • Takimi Shigure, close friend of Gentatsu and leader of the rebellion. He is the master of the Saiki Kanuma, a style effective indoors and in the dark.
  • Musashino Yasuharu, a young samurai whose father was killed in the Boshin war. He befriends and teaches Yahiko some of his budo.
