He attended Heckmondwike Grammar school between 2000 and 2005. He was nicknamed 'moon head' with reference to his large head and body. He is ridiculously big for someone of only 19 years of age, as a result of being given growth hormone as a youngster. He is a huge impact player in the game. He captained England Schoolboys last season and made great progress in the Junior Academy. Big things are tipped for this loose forward who is also a top golfer, winning the longest drive at the Bulls Golf day only a few weeks after he joined the club. His brother Luke Burgess (rugby league) is also a rugby league player at Leeds Rhinos. He won the long drive competition at the club in 2005. Burgess also has an interest in cricket, playing for Liversedge CC in West Yorkshire. On 14 March 2008 Sam met Leeds Met Health employee Richard 'Dick' Leech at Headingley Carnegie Stadium before the Leeds Rhinos match against Harlequins RL. It is rumoured that they were photographed together, and the photograph would be used on the Leeds Met Health website.
