What actually happened to Salmacis?

In some other examples of this myth it is said the "Salmacis was no more". But in other examples it says nothing.

Was she actually destoyed or when she merged with hermaphroditus she became a voice in the back of his head. eg like cortana with master cheif. If the fist one is correct that would defeat the purpose of being merged.
